<!--
  A SITEMAP INDEX, since 2026-09-05. It used to be the list itself, with four
  URLs on it; those four now live in sitemap-pages.xml and the reasoning that
  was here went with them.

  ===========================================================================
  WHY AN INDEX, WHEN 1,194 URLS WOULD FIT IN ONE FILE
  ===========================================================================

  NOT BECAUSE OF THE LIMITS. sitemaps.org caps a single file at 50,000 URLs and
  50 MB uncompressed; this site has 1,194 URLs and the Bible file is 84 kB. One
  file would be comfortably legal and will be for a very long time. Anybody
  reading this and assuming the split was forced should know it was not.

  IT IS BECAUSE THE TWO HALVES ARE WRITTEN BY DIFFERENT AUTHORS. sitemap-bible.xml
  is generated on every build by tools/prerender.mjs out of the book table in
  src/lib/bible.ts — 66 books, 1,189 chapters, and hand-copying that list is a
  promise to have it disagree with the app one day. sitemap-pages.xml is four
  URLs and about eighty lines of argument about why it is only four, which no
  generator could write and which must not be overwritten by one.

  Merging them means one of two bad things: a generator that has to preserve
  somebody's prose, or four URLs that quietly stop being reasoned about. An
  index costs one extra fetch, once, and keeps the hand-written half hand-written.

  It also leaves the right shape for what is coming. public/robots.txt records
  Ty's 2026-09-05 decision that anonymous prayer requests are to be indexed, and
  the four blockers that stop it today. When that ships it will need a THIRD
  sitemap, and that one cannot be a build step or a static file — requests are
  deleted continuously, so it has to be a Cloud Function. Adding it will be one
  <sitemap> element here rather than a redesign.

  ===========================================================================
  WHERE EACH ONE COMES FROM
  ===========================================================================

  /sitemap-pages.xml public/sitemap-pages.xml, by hand. Vite copies it.
  /sitemap-bible.xml   dist/sitemap-bible.xml, written by tools/prerender.mjs
                       during `npm run build`. IT IS NOT IN public/ AND NOT IN
                       GIT — it is build output, like the 1,190 chapter pages it
                       describes, and it does not exist until the build runs.

  Both are listed in robots.txt's Allow block, because a sitemap a crawler is
  forbidden to fetch is a sitemap that does nothing.

  No <lastmod> on either, for the same reason neither file carries one: it would
  have to be invented. The scripture has not changed since the World English
  Bible was finished, and a build timestamp is not a content date.
